Simone's Table Makeover

For a while I've been searching for a little table & chair set for Simone.  I was looking at the Ikea Kids Table  over and over.  But it was so borrrrrinnnnnggggg (said in my best angst-y teenager voice).  Although the great things about that set are A. the price, and B. the fact that you could do anything with the paint.

Luckily, I didn't pull the trigger on that set and waited.  I stopped off at Goodwill to browse with Simone one afternoon and found this BEAUTY!  A real wood table with cute little chairs for, hold on to your butts...$17!  It was cheaper than the cheap Ikea table set and it will have some longevity, too.

Some Mom put some love into this paint job, but it wasn't our style.  It took me a few weeks to get it done, because I really have like two hours during a day that I get to myself.  Well, to be fair... I have more than that, but the rest of the time is usually spent vacuuming, washing dishes, working, blogging, and occasionally peeing.  Anyways, I used leftover Valspar Paint from her room (Simone's Styling Diggs) to complete the project.  After a few layers of paint, and some elbow grease this is how it turned out.

I'm all about finding a GOOD DEAL!  And, I love that I was able to make it well suited for Simone.  Good thing is as she grows up we could change the color to fit her style... or possibly for baby #2.  Oh, gosh, just saying that makes my head spin!

Simone was so grateful!

Dusty, Old, Beasts...

In the midst of several LARGE projects going on at our house, I've been doing a few small ones, too.  We have two Hampton Bay outdoor fans on our patio.  They were there when we moved in, and though they are relatively new, the former owners painted the fan blades with this AWFUL stain.  This stain was also in our kitchen (ICK!) which we have since painted over.  I'll post about that soon.

Since Todd & I are a one income family we try to do as much of fixing up "this old house" on our own.  We live a true DIY life-style.  If we can't DIourselfs... it's probably going to wait a few years.  But, sometimes things just need a little love and elbow grease to really shine.  So, when I looked at these sad, dirty, but in good working order fans I felt compelled to breathe new life into them.  And, these things needed CPR.

How Long Could YOU Look at That?!
I kept walking outside seeing these dusty, old, beasts... and I'd yell to Todd, "I'm about to paint these things!!!"  He would always smile and say "Ok, honey", looking up from being knee deep in ANOTHER amazing project that he's completing.  BAHHHH, he's so good at everything... I'd be jealous of his skills if I wasn't married to him.  Anyways, a few weeks back Simone crashed hard into her morning nap... and I knew EXACTLY how I was going to use the time.

So first I unscrewed the globe cover for the lights.  I really don't want to tell you how nasty those were.  They were a death trap for generations of bugs.  And, the dust...oh, the dust.  Living next to the mountain is beautiful, but boy is it dust-tay!  I unscrewed all of the fan blades, too.  I rinsed everything off, and dried each piece.  We had left over white paint from painting Simone's bedroom, so I decided to use that on the fan blades.

After painting all of the blades I was pretty proud of myself.  Simone was still sleeping, so I decided I wanted to try and spruce up the fan-blade-attachment-thingies (technical term).  After rummaging through the garage, I remembered I bought teal spray paint for another project.  Since my more color conservative better half was at work... I got to spraying.  Todd fully admits if I told him the color idea BEFORE he probably would have given me "the face".

They looked pretty good after the first coat (above), but the second coat (below) really brought it together.  While waiting for everything to dry, I even got inspired to do something else on the patio...

Once it was all dry I got to screwing everything in.  I'll admit... I couldn't get it all done with the morning nap.  I had to do this in the afternoon after Simone & I had lunch, played peak-a-boo, silly mommy faces, & reading her favorite book four times.

Here's the finished product!  It feels so much better.  I think it's a little hard to tell how big of an improvement it is... but it sure made me feel better.

As I mentioned I was inspired to update another part of our patio while this was going on.  Again, the previous owners of our house clearly weren't the sharpest number two pencils in the box.  They painted around the french doors with wood stain that looks heinous, AND they painted the beautiful french doors tan.  So the tan paint is chipping off... we have plans to strip it off eventually, or just give in and buy new french doors...probably the former.

Anyways... french doors...looking gross.  I had added the white flowers a while back.  They actually were on a string of lights that died, so I popped out the bulbs and hung up the flowers.  Really just couldn't get myself to throw those cute little flowers.  So here's what it looked like when Simone woke up... can you see her in her bouncer?

I painted the trim with the same white paint I used on the fans.  But, my favorite part was how CUTE the flowers looked when I sprayed them with the teal spray paint.  I LOVE IT.

Here's a backed up view of the doors.

And a view of both fans...

Little improvements never hurt, and they sure make you feel better about the look of your home.  I used to be one of those people that would say, screw it, if I couldn't replace something with a brand new version.  Having a budget and a house in a constant state of renewal sure have changed me in that way.

Stay tuned...I'll have many more DIY posts to come!

The Day I Became Mrs. Hart

In honor of our upcoming two year anniversary I decided I would dedicate a post to our wedding day.  Which, was beautiful, perfect, and amazing for us.  I'll never forget it, and until Simone was born it was the best moment(s) I've ever had with Todd.

Literally I could write a book on all of the hard work, blood, sweat, and tears that went into planning this wedding.  All I will say on that is... planning a wedding isn't easy.  If you've planned one you know.  No matter how excited you are, or how much you swear you won't be like "other people" who let it get all over them, it does.  Truly, all that matters on your wedding day is that you marry your best friend.  I sure hope you do that when you get married.

Todd & I were married in Key West, FL.  If you've never been to Key West... it's a bit quirky to say the least.  But, it's one of the most beautiful places (in my humble opinion) to be married.  Prior to our wedding my Mom & I flew to Key West to scout out the perfect location.  We ended up finding The Reach Resort, a beautiful Waldorf Astoria resort located on the Atlantic.  Check out their Earth Cam to see right where we were married.

We printed our own programs - Card stock from Michael's
My hair and makeup were done by my Sister in law (Parke Avenue Salon) using MAC makeup and J Beverly Hills hair supplies.  I wore a birdcage veil & head piece by David's Bridal.  My dress was also from David's Bridal from the Galina Signature collection.  Our flowers were done by Mama Flowers, dinner and our cake were provided by the Strip House.

Getting Ready
The photography was done by the incomparable Rob O'Neal, a Key West local & legendary photographer!  He was AMAZING.  He captured moments I didn't even realize were happening, and the overall feel of our wedding.  When I look at our photos I truly relive that day.  I can't say enough good things about Rob... Todd & I talk about getting back to Key West to grab a beer with him and get our pictures taken because he was beyond cool!

Since his photos were so wonderful... I'll let them tell the story of our wedding...

During our ceremony Todd & I decided to forego any sand ceremony (I mean, we were already at the beach!) and instead asked our Mothers to give us some advice on marriage.  It was very touching & sweet, oh and windy!  Both Moms also were gifted handkerchiefs with special messages from Etsy.com.

We also decided to write our own vows.  Here I am trying my best to get through them without weeping!

After we exchanged rings....

It was official, we're married!

Our First Kiss as Husband & Wife

Truly a happy moment!  Finally, after a year & a half of work we could relax and enjoy our reception!

We enjoyed hugs, kisses, and congratulations from our family & friends at the end of the pier.

Little touches...

As the night wore on...there were many photos like this... I'll spare us all by not posting them.

The last photo of the night is a winner...

I always look back on our wedding with such wonderful memories.  Everything that we worked hard on came together perfectly.  We had so many wonderful and loving people there with us that day, and we could just feel the support.  Even now, almost two years later we STILL talk about how amazing that day was for us.  We still appreciate everyone flying all the way to Key West to join us on our special day.  We love you guys.
